Take a Hike
Umstead State Park
Whether you’re up for a quick walk or an afternoon of exploring, Umstead State Park has trails ranging in both length and difficulty. The Company Mill Trail is an area favorite as it offers a 1.3 or 5.8 mile hike along a beautiful trail.
Hemlock Bluffs
This hidden gem is more located in Cary near Holly Springs. The 3.5 mile trail offers various lookout points and plaques highlighting local plant and animal life.
Lake Johnson
Enjoy 3.5 miles of paved greenway on top of 1.9 miles of unpaved trails. This park includes more than just hiking options- during the warmer months you have access to renting pedal boats, canoes, kayaks, sailboats, and Jon Boats.
Museums
NC Museum of History
Located directly across the street the the State Capitol, the NC Museum of History offers a peek into the past through preserved local, state, and regional artifacts. General admission to the museum is free although some special events and exhibits may charge.
NC Museum of Natural Science
Also located directly across from the State Capitol, the NC Museum of Natural Science is filled to the brim with exhibits, special programs, and the opportunity to get up close and personal with science. General admission to this museum is free but donations are accepted.
NC Museum of Art
Whether you’re enjoying a beautiful day walking the Museum Park or strolling throught the galleries taking in world famous masterpieces, you’re sure to find something to ignite your creativity. The NCMA offers movies, concerts, and fantastic events alongside the beautiful paintings and sculptures that adorn the space. Admission to the Museum’s permanent collection and Museum Park is free. There is a charge for some special exhibitions and programs.
Brewery Tours
North Carolina is quickly becoming a leader in the craft brewing industry and the Raleigh area is now home to over 20 breweries. While there are many brewery tour services available, you can also call up to specific breweries and check out their tour times- many tours are free, very informative, and include delicious beer!
